Why January 1 Is So Important | Mary, Mother of God Explained
January 1 is not just the start of a new civil year โ in the Catholic Church, it is the Octave Day of Christmas and one of the most important feasts of the entire season: the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God. This day proclaims Mary as Theotokos, a Greek word meaning โGod-bearer.โ Calling Mary the Mother of God is not about elevating Mary above God, but about protecting the truth about Jesus Christ โ that He is one divine Person who is fully God and fully man. This teaching was solemnly affirmed at the Council of Ephesus in 431 AD. January 1 also commemorates the circumcision and naming of Jesus (Luke 2:21), when He officially received the name Jesus, meaning โGod saves.โ Over the centuries, the Church has returned this day to its ancient Marian focus, beginning each new year by entrusting the world to Maryโs intercession. It is also observed as the World Day of Peace, reminding us to start the year in prayer, gratitude, and trust in Godโs saving love.
