On 14th January the Nicaraguan regime released from prison Bishop Rolando José Álvarez of Matagalpa.
He was immediately expelled from the country and arrived in the Vatican the same day.
Álvarez was arrested in August 2022 and sentenced to 26 years in prison for his dissident political views. Along with him, Bishop Isidoro Mora of the Siuna diocese, 14 priests and two seminarians were exiled.
Nicaragua said that diplomacy had secured their release. The article's picture shows the group with Cardinal Pietro Parolin.
