John Ronald Reuel Tolkien [dʒɒn ˈɹɒnld ɹuːl ˈtɒlkiːn], CBE (* 3. Januar 1892 in Bloemfontein, Oranje-Freistaat; † 2. September 1973 in Bournemouth, England), war ein britischer Schriftsteller und Philologe. Sein Roman Der Herr der Ringe (The Lord of the Rings, 1954/55, auf Deutsch erschienen 1969/70) ist eines der erfolgreichsten Bücher des 20. Jahrhunderts und gilt als grundlegendes Werk für die moderne Fantasy-Literatur.
Tolkien, später Professor für englische Sprachwissenschaft an der Universität Oxford, hatte seit seiner Jugend an einer eigenen Mythologie gearbeitet, die auf eigens konstruierten Sprachen basierte und erst postum unter dem Titel Das Silmarillion erschien. Sowohl Der Herr der Ringe als auch das erfolgreiche Kinderbuch Der Hobbit (1937) spielen in dieser von Tolkien erfundenen Welt. Auch einige seiner sprach- und literaturwissenschaftlichen Beiträge wie der Essay Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics (1936) gelten als wegweisend.
