En la perspectiva del N.T., la cruz nunca es meta final, siempre es camino hacia la vida y tránsito hacia la gloria (Mc 8,31 par; Jn 3,14; 8,28; 12,32; 19,34.37; He 2,23.32; 3,15; 5,30-31; ver Apoc 22,2.14.19).
Durante los tres primeros siglos del cristianismo quizás no se utilizó mucho el signo visible de la cruz entre los cristianos. Hay que entender que la Iglesia era perseguida y la cruz era para la cultura pagana signo de castigo, de derrota y de mal. Por eso los cristianos utilizaban otras figuras como la del Buen Pastor, el pez, el ancla, la paloma,... tal como vemos en las catacumbas de Roma. Pero sería falso decir que los cristianos de los primeros siglos rechazaban la cruz. Al contrario, la llevaban siempre en su corazón. Ya desde las Sagradas Escrituras era signo primordial del cristiano.

During World War II, Lithuania was under Soviet occupation and in 1948, the communist government closed the Church of St. Michael and abolished the convent. Many of the sacred objects and artworks were moved to another church to be saved from Soviet hands, but the Divine Mercy image was left undisturbed in St. Michael's for several years.
In 1951, two women were able to pay the keeper of St. Michael's church and save the image. Since it couldn't be taken across the border to Poland, they gave it to the priest in charge of the Church of the Holy Spirit for safekeeping.
